Canada gears up for some thrilling International Events

For those Reining Canada members that are interested in International Reining Competition the next few years are going to be exciting. The first event will be the FEI World Reining Championship to be held in Manerbio, Italy, on September 11-14, 2008 at the Palasturla facility. This prestigous competition will have 70,000 Euros added according to the IRHA! The FEI competition will be organized by the Italian Equestrian Sports Federation (FISE), with the technical support of the Italian Reining Horse Association (IRHA).

Invitations will be formally extended to all Foreign National Federations, including Reining Canada, and all Federations can enter one team composed of a minimum of three horse and rider combinations with a maximum of four combinations plus one reserve horse. Countries that do not have the minimum three qualified riders for the team competition may send one or two individuals who have qualified for the event.

The qualification is from January 1st, 2007 to July 7, 2008 and to be eligible, riders must have achieved a minimum average score of 68 at two different CRIs during the qualification period, at least one of which was in Canada. The guidelines for TEAM selection, from qualified riders, will be published shortly by the International Committee of Reining Canada.

In the past, a World Reining Championship has only been offered during the FEI World Equestrian Games held every four years. Coming up this year, for the first time, teams and individuals will be competing for the prestigious World Championship medals outside the WEG.

Reining Canada is working very hard at trying to coordinate CRI's this spring to allow riders to qualify. Of course all riders that rode in any 2 of the 3 CRI's held in Canada in 2007, and scored a minimum of 68 will have already met the CRI qualification part of the Team Selection Process. If a rider rode in only 1 CRI, they will have to compete in a second CRI in order to be eligible to part of the Team Selection Process.

More information will come shortly regarding the TEAM selection process.

Also, watch for more international event news with a possible TEAM Nations Cup type event to be held at Windsor Castle in spring of 2009. Reining Canada has also started to work on the WEG 2010 Kentucky, Reining Canada Team.....
Keep watching...

Hot off the Press - Team Selection Procedures

Team Selection Procedures for the Canadian Reining Team and Individual Competitors representing Canada at the FEI World Reining Championships, Manerbio Italy, September 11 -14, 2008.

Riders must initially commit their intention and willingness to represent Canada and to support all necessary financial obligations incurred, by sending a letter, or e-mail to Reining Canada, International Committee. As the team is limited to a maximum of four riders, Reining Canada must act diligently to insure the commitment of riders and owners to the event, so as to prevent serious competitors from being eliminated by riders and/or owners who fail to understand the commitment required to participation in such an event.

To this end, riders will submit a cheque of $500 to Reining Canada that will be held in good faith as a commitment to the event from the rider and owner, upon completion of the event the cheque shall be returned to the rider. It should be noted that all expenses pertaining to International Competition are the responsibility of the rider. Reining Canada will Endeavour to seek financial support for its' International Program through Sponsorships and other means when possible but cannot use general revenue from Reining Canada members. Horse owners and riders must be prepared to support the full cost of competition.

In the spirit of fair competition Reining Canada reserves the right to alter these conditions in the event of an unforeseen or extraordinary situation arising.

It is recognized that when applicable, FEI and EC Qualification rules take precedence. In the case of the FEI World Championships the rider must have scored a minimum of 68 at two CRI's within the qualifying period of January 1, 2007 to July 7, 2008. At least one of the CRI's must have been in Canada.

The first Canadian Team member will be the rider with the two (2) highest combined scores at the qualifying CRI's. The second team member will be the rider with the second, two (2) highest combined scores and so on. Note that riders can qualify at any CRI's, as long as one of the two is in Canada.

Cody Sapergia Canadian Reiner of the Year

A new Reiner of the Year is announce! Reining Canada's Reiner of the Year Award is given to a Canadian Reiner for an outstanding achievement or contribution to the sport of reining. The 2007 recipient, Cody Sapergia, certainly fits the criteria.

Cody Sapergia grew up riding horses on his family's ranch South West of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Cody and his entire family: Vern, Molly, Terry Lee and Shawna participated in the Quarter Horse Shows across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

Cody took a brief hiatus from horses during his senior years in High School until College. Cody started to take training horses to supplement his income ad hoc during college. After College Cody was in and out of the horse business for nearly nine years. Finally in 2001, a friend suggested to Cody that he quit resisting being a horse trainer and instead embrace it. With the support of Cody's wife Lorie, he turned his full attention to training and showing reining and working cow horses. It was that very same year, 2001, that Cody garnered a spot on Canada's Gold Medal Reining Team.

Cody enjoyed three years of tremendous success training in Alberta and in late 2004 an opportunity arose to train at a first class reining facility in Oklahoma. Griffin Quarter Horses were actively seeking a motivated individual to assist them as their Head Trainer for their many top bred Open and Non Pro horses. At the time, Cody believed Lance and his family were very serious and tough competitors in the Reining Industry and Cody's own goals would compliment the Griffins. Cody feels the same today almost four years later, "Riding great horses in great facilities with great people, enough said."

2007 was a pivotal year for Cody while there were numerous milestones including assisting Lance Griffin in achieving the first ever NRHA Million Dollar Owner status, for Cody an entire year of dedication and hard work culminated at the NRHA Futurity in Oklahoma City. To be an Open Futurity finalist at the NRHA Futurity Cody had to have a combined score greater than that of 346 other entries. Cody demonstrated his talent and dedication to his career earning not one but two spots in the finals. Cody rode Griffin's talented three year old mare, JDs Shining Image, and the talented Canadian bred, Dun Playin Tag. Cody comments, "to train and show a horse like Jake (AQHA Name: Dun Playin Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Brennas Dun It Fancy) is simply satisfying. He rode well all year but there is nothing like running through the Coliseum gate when all the lights are on and hearing the crowd reflects what you are feeling, it is as though every person in the audience is riding the horse with you every step of the way."

Cody earned just over $69,000 for his dynamic third place finish in the 2007 NRHA Open Futurity. All together in 2007 Cody earned in excess of $161,000 earning him the 4th position in the NRHA Top 20 Professionals Program. Reining Canada is pleased to present Cody Sapergia with the Canadian Reiner of the Year Award for 2007.

A couple quotes from Cody to consider. Shakespeare - "Is it not strange that desire should so many years outlive performance." Mark Twain - "Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect." Recommended reading - "A New Earth" by Eckhart Tolle
